US Tax Credit FAQs from HPBA

What is the Biomass-Burning Stove Tax Credit? This federal tax credit encourages people to make energy-conscious purchases that improve the energy efficiency of their home. It is an up to $1,500 credit you can get for buying a qualifying biomass-burning stove or fireplace insert between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010. Biomass simply means the stove uses wood or pellet fuel.

What is the difference between a tax deduction and a tax credit? A deduction is an expense or amount you can subtract from your taxable income. A tax credit lowers your actual tax bill dollar-for-dollar, in this case by up to $1,500. In general, a tax credit is more valuable than a similar tax deduction.

How is the value of this tax credit determined? When you buy a qualifying biomass-burning appliance between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010, you get a tax credit of 30% of the total price, up to $1,500 dollars. So, for example, if your wood or pellet stove cost $5,000 (which can include installation), you can deduct $1,500 from the taxes you owe the government.

What appliances qualify for the tax credit? Any wood- or pellet-burning stove that meets the 75% efficiency rating qualifies for this credit.Manufacturers test their products to certify they meet this efficiency standard and the IRS-required certification will come with the product straight from the appliance manufacturer. Visit your local specialty retailer who can explain which products they have will qualify for the tax credit.

Are biomass stoves installed in new or vacation homes covered by this tax credit? No. The credit only applies to your existing principal residence. New homes and vacation homes don't qualify, nor do homes owned as rental units.

How do I ensure that I can collect on my tax credit? Save your receipt that proves you purchased the qualifying appliance between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010. You'll also need a manufacturer's certification statement that states your product meets the 75% efficiency rating needed to qualify for this tax credit.

Your specialty retailer will give you the manufacturer's certification statement that must include:
-The name and address of the manufacturer.
-Identification of the class of qualified energy property (e.g., biomass-burning stove).
-The make, model number and any other appropriate identifiers of the stove.
-A statement that the product is an eligible qualified energy property.
-A signature of a person able to bind the manufacturer to the above standards.
-These documents don't need to be attached to your tax return, but you should keep them for your records.

Are installation costs included in this tax credit? Yes. Installation costs are included as long as professional installation is required for the proper and safe operation of the stove.

U.S. SALES ORGANIZATION

January, 2009 - The consolidation of Selkirk and Hart & Cooley announced last August was driven by the deterioration of our markets and declining business levels, along with the opportunity to capitalize on a number of synergies between the Selkirk and Hart & Cooley organizations. Since that announcement the economy has continued to worsen, and 2009 residential markets in the U.S. will be down over 25% from 2008 levels. This has increased the urgency in capitalizing on the synergies and talent that exits between the two companies.
To further strengthen our sales performance, we will have a single point contact for each of our key U.S. business segments. This will include all brands sold through the respective channels. This focus will better enable us to drive sales performance by optimizing pricing, product rationalization, brand utilization and customer development strategies.
Going forward Tim Rothgeb will be responsible for the Hearth, Retail and OEM sales channels for all brands. This includes Selkirk, Hart & Cooley and AMP. Supporting Tim in this role will be Fred Pierce for Hearth, Gary Light for Retail and Rich Sinsitore for OEM accounts. Selkirk customer service, and the rest of the Dallas office staff, will continue to report to Tim as currently structured.
Gary Fisher will be responsible for the HVAC distribution channel for all brands. This includes Selkirk, Hart & Cooley and AMP. All regional sales managers will report to Gary. In addition to his current sales manager reports, John Mennella and Eckhard Hilscher will join the team. The sales administration group in Grand Rapids will continue to report to Gary.

Sales Tips: Direct-Temp/Multi-Fuel (DT-M)

Are your customers having a problem venting those appliances that burn corn or other bio fuels? Are the corrosive exhaust gases eating away the metal? Is there a problem with these appliances getting sufficient combustion air? If your customers are dealing with any of these issues with a competitive product, then they need the Direct-Temp® for Multi-Fuel product, or “DT-M” for short. The DT-M product line has all the features that satisfy the needs of the customer. Let’s look at these features in detail.
• An inner conduit made of the superferritic stainless steel alloy AL29-4C®. This corrosion-resistant stainless steel has the strength to resist destructive flue gases derived from burning bio fuels, such as corn, hulled wheat, soy beans, olive pits, cherry pits, processed silage, waste paper, and the like.
• Dual use: Conventional or Concentric Venting. Having a dual capability, the DT-M product can be used as a double-wall vent pipe with superior insulating qualities when close clearances are required. Or, it can be used as a concentric system for direct vent applications when outside air needs to be brought in for combustion.
• A one-pipe system. The inner conduit carries the flue gases out, while the annular space between the flue and the outer jacket brings in the outside air for combustion. Exhaust and air intake in one vent system speeds up the installation process of the venting system.
• Sure-Seal™ silicone gasket technology. Simple and fast installation is achieved by the Sure-Seal™ silicone gasket technology. Providing a safe and long-lasting assembly, this technology was developed with years of experience in fabricating fastening systems that are quick and effective. The integral silicone seal in the joint means there’s no need to apply a high-temperature sealant.
• Clearance. One-inch clearance allows installations in the most confining spaces.
• UL listings. The DT-M is UL641 and UL/ORD-C441 listed.
• Size offering. The DT-M is available in two sizes—3" x 5" and 4" x 7".Direct Temp for Multi-Fuel (DT-M)
